Two years ago my family was changed forever, and it happened through a simple phone call. A couple of years and two new kids later, it has become our new normal. I’m glad our local TV station was interested to share it with others.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know how we fostered and then eventually adopted our son and daughter  from our within our community. With each one, it started by receiving a phone call from our foster agency, Methodist Children’s Home. Until now, though, many of you didn’t know their back story.

A few months ago I was speaking at an event in our community. Afterward a local TV anchor woman – Gillian Sheridan – came up and asked if she could share our family’s story as a segment on the news. We talked about it as a family an eventually decided we would love for her to tell others what God has done in us. So last night it finally aired.

If you are considering becoming a foster or adoptive parent, I hope our story is one that encourages you. It has impacted us far more than it has impacted our new “supernatural” kids in our home.

The prophet Isaiah says it this way:

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”

Isaiah 58:6-7

God’s heart is for the downcast, the poor, the fatherless, the orphans and the widows. Maybe you could consider being a family that welcomes little ones who are hurting into your home as well. Believe me, you’ll be forever changed if you do.
